Balancing Business, Family, and Perception in the Cannabis Industry
Working in the cannabis industry—whether directly with the plant or on the ancillary side—can feel like walking a tightrope, especially as a parent and entrepreneur. The stigma that still lingers, even in states with established frameworks for legalization, creates unique challenges that impact both business decisions and personal lives. After transitioning from more traditional industries like technology, software development, and government consulting into the cannabis space, I’ve learned firsthand what it means to build a future in an evolving, sometimes misunderstood industry, all while raising a family.
One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is being visible in an industry still working to shed its stigma. As cannabis businesses continue to grow, establishing a forward-facing presence on social media is vital. But how do you manage that visibility while protecting your family’s privacy? How do you ensure your business doesn’t negatively affect how your children are perceived at school, or how your neighbors and community members view your family? Finding the right balance between transparency and discretion is something I regularly reflect on, and I’m curious how others in this space handle the same.
What keeps me optimistic is the transformation happening within the cannabis industry. As more medical and adult-use markets open, the conversation around cannabis is evolving. People are becoming more open-minded, with a growing recognition of cannabis’s potential for wellness, innovation, and economic opportunity. For those of us in ancillary services, this shift offers a unique opportunity to be part of a larger movement that is helping to reshape the industry. How have you seen perceptions of cannabis change in your community or industry?
As I work to grow The High Index, I’ve come to realize how essential the ancillary side of the business is to the overall success of the cannabis ecosystem. It’s about providing the right support and services to help cannabis companies thrive in a legal framework, while also ensuring that my family thrives. In this journey, I’ve seen my business evolve right alongside my children’s growth. Has anyone else experienced their business growing alongside their family in ways they didn’t anticipate?
Running a business while raising a family in this space is challenging, but it’s also deeply fulfilling. It requires authenticity, staying true to your mission, and ensuring that your business aligns with the values you hold as a parent. The key is not losing sight of the bigger picture—both professionally and personally. How do you stay grounded in this balance, and what strategies have you found successful in juggling family life with a cannabis career?
The cannabis industry is still in its early stages, and many of us are learning and growing alongside it. While there are challenges, the opportunities to reshape the narrative and contribute to positive change are immense. Balancing family and business in this space is no easy feat, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. Together, we are building something meaningful - creating a future where cannabis is recognized for its potential to improve lives and drive innovation. The progress we’re making today is laying the foundation for a brighter, more inclusive tomorrow. Let’s continue to lead with purpose and celebrate the strides we’ve already made.
